VEX Over Under
For the VEX Robotics Competition Over Under season, Phillip Yong led the design of a low-profile, fast-cycle robot built for consistent scoring and reliable field navigation. The chassis uses a six-wheel, high-traction drivetrain geared for a balance of acceleration and control. Phillip optimized the structure in Fusion 360 to minimize weight while preserving stiffness. A dual-roller front intake funnels triballs into the scoring path, with side rails and polycarbonate guides to reduce jams and keep pieces aligned during aggressive driving.
Scoring is handled by a tuned catapult mechanism driven by a dedicated motor and elastic assist, providing repeatable launch trajectories to both the goal and match-load zones. Autonomous routines use odometry-based position tracking and sensor feedback to follow triball collection and scoring paths, coordinating intake and catapult timing. Driver control code emphasizes smooth acceleration curves, rapid recovery from impacts, and predictable handling across battery voltages. Across local and regional events, the robot reached playoff eliminations, earning Design and Tournament Finalist awards, validating the underlying engineering decisions in both mechanical design and control strategy.
