VEX Push Back

For the VEX Robotics Competition Push Back season, Phillip Yong led the design of a low-profile, high-traction robot optimized for field control and match endurance. The chassis used a rigid, triangulated frame and a geared drive tuned for controlled pushing power rather than top speed. A robust front wedge and side rails were iterated in CAD and prototyped to consistently win contact at the neutral zone and redirect game objects, while still preserving the maneuverability needed for rapid repositioning and responsive driver control throughout each match.

The robot’s pushing and defensive systems were supported by carefully tuned control algorithms, including driver-assist macros for rapid orientation changes and current-limited drive profiles to prevent brownouts under heavy load. Autonomous routines prioritized early field position and disrupting opponent scoring cycles. Throughout the season, iterative hardware and software refinements improved reliability, reduced control drift, and produced cleaner driving. The final configuration translated these design choices into consistent elimination-round appearances, stronger defensive ratings, and measurable gains in match win rates at both local and regional events.
